Mozambique aims for more ambitious targets in environmental commitments
This Monday, Mozambique began the process of drafting its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0), which will define climate mitigation and adaptation targets for the 2026-2035 period, to be submitted in October to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change..
According to Jadwiga Massinga, a technician from the National Directorate for the Environment and Climate Change, who was speaking at the launch of the process to draw up the new commitments, the new NDC should "develop the mitigation potential in the sectors that are less exploited in the current NDC".
Quoted by Terra MagazineIn his speech on the occasion, Jadwiga Massinga pointed to waste, industry, seagrass, mangroves and oil and gas as some examples of the areas that should receive more attention, "strengthening data collection, transparency and funding mechanisms".
However, despite the challenges, Mozambique highlights progress in the application of conservationist agricultural and livestock techniques, access to clean energy and environmental restoration.
"We have made some progress in applying conservationist agricultural production and soil protection techniques, improving access to clean energy, expanding the national grid and creating distribution micro-grids, massifying the use of natural gas and promoting energy efficiency," said the institution's representative.
The process, led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries, will require strong inter-ministerial coordination and the participation of the private sector, civil society and academia.
"We have a need as a country to develop technology, innovation and human capital to deal with the need to adapt and mitigate climate change," said Jadwiga Massinga in his speech.
