Festival da Culturaː Ministra recomenda medidas de prevenção contra Mpox

The Minister of Education and Culture, Samaria Tovela, yesterday (16) called for the necessary measures to be taken to prevent the spread of Mpox during the celebrations for the 12th edition of the National Culture Festival (FNC), which begins on Monday in the city of Tete.

"We're in a challenging phase and we've all heard that there's a disease called Mpox and that it's bothering us. Any of us can get sick, but when we feel any discomfort we have to approach our doctors, nurses or health workers, because that's what's most important," said Tovela quoted in an AIM publication.

Tovela was speaking during a visit to the field that will host the inaugural session and where he witnessed yet another rehearsal session for the groups that are due to present various cultural events.

Still quoted in the publication, she also said that the current edition of the FNC, whose festivities kick off next Monday, should be a moment to exalt Mozambicanity and express the spirit of unity to the whole world.

For her part, the Secretary of State for Education and Culture, Matilde Muocha, assured that the team organizing the National Culture Festival is taking all the necessary measures to prevent the festivities from becoming a hotbed for the transmission of the virus.

"(Mpox) is a very big concern. All our accommodation centers, including entertainment venues, are equipped with health posts. The entire health sector in the province is active, including the Red Cross," he said.

He added that each provincial delegation attending the festival includes a health professional, including a technician and a doctor.

However, he recognizes that the greatest mechanism for managing this situation is prevention. "Reinforcing hygiene and safety measures, guaranteeing the dissemination of information so that everyone can know how to report and reinforcing the capacity for attention," said Muocha.

Tete does not yet have any recent confirmed cases of Mpox contamination, but the province borders the provinces of Niassa and Manica, to the north and south respectively, both described by the National Directorate of Public Health as major hotspots for the virus.

Of the 38 positive cases confirmed by Monday, 33 were registered in Niassa province (Lago and Marrupa districts) and Manica (Chimoio city and Machaze district).

However, according to the National Directorate of Public Health, more than half of the confirmed cases have now recovered and the individuals have already been discharged home.
