Angola: Authorities arrest taxi drivers' leaders to contain demonstrations

In Angola, three leaders of cab drivers' organizations were arrested on Monday, August 11, on suspicion of criminal association and incitement to violence, following the cab services strike last July, which culminated in several deaths and the destruction of public and private establishments.
According to a RFIIn reaction to the latest protests, the Council of the Republic urged Angolan citizens to adopt a civic and orderly attitude, encouraging the defense and security agencies to continue with the measures to guarantee public order, tranquility and security.
The spokesman for Angola's Criminal Investigation Service (SIC), Manuel Halaiwa, explained that the heads of the taxi drivers' organizations were arrested on Monday, August 11, for the crimes of criminal association, incitement to violence and attacks on transport safety.
"On Monday, August 11, in compliance with arrest warrants issued by the Public Prosecutor's Office, national citizens identified as Francisco Eduardo, president of the ATA, Rafael Ginga Inácio, president of the Community Taxi Cooperative of Angola, CTCA, and António Alexandre Freitas, president of the Freitas Taxi and Motorcycle Cooperative, CTMF, were arrested in the city of Luanda for crimes of criminal association, incitement to violence, attacks on transport safety and terrorism. There is strong evidence of his involvement in promoting the acts of vandalism and rioting against public and private goods and services that took place at the end of July this year," he said.
In light of the events, the Council of the Republic, meeting on Monday, August 11, calls on the population to maintain civility and respect for the authorities, avoiding the spread of disinformation on digital platforms, according to a statement read out by the Councilor, Paula Simon.
"The Council of the Republic calls on the Angolan population to maintain a civic and orderly attitude, guided by the responsible and conscious exercise of the rights and freedoms enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Angola and in the Law and by respect for the Authorities, also avoiding the dissemination of disinformation on digital platforms, in order to safeguard the well-being of all," the statement said.
Finally, the Council of the Republic, chaired by President João Lourenço, encourages the defense and security bodies to continue with the measures to guarantee public order, tranquility and security and to maintain social peace.
