Afrobasket: Moçambique iguala suas piores classificações de sempre

Afrobasket: Mozambique equals its worst ever ranking

The Mozambican Senior Women's Basketball Team finished sixth at the 29th edition of Afrobasket, which ended yesterday in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
On Saturday (02), in the match for fifth and sixth place, Mozambique was unrecognizable against Cameroon and suffered the heaviest defeat of the competition, with a 20-point difference (60-40).
According to a Challenge newspaperMozambique thus equaled its worst ever Afrobasket ranking, which it had already recorded in Tunisia-2000, Madagascar-2009 and Cameroon-2015.
As a result of its ranking, the national team will have to qualify for the 2027 Afrobasket, as it failed to finish in the top four (which qualify directly) or in fifth place, which could have taken advantage of the fact that the host was in the top five to take its place.
Abidjan's sixth place is indicative of a downward trend in the strength of the national "five" in the African context.
In fact, only three times in the last 25 years has the team finished on the podium, namely with a silver medal, a second place when playing at home in 2003 and 2013, and a third place (bronze) in 2005 in Nigeria.
In the last 10 years, only twice has Mozambique managed to reach the semi-finals and finish in the top four, namely in Mali-2007 and Senegal-2019.
Before finishing sixth, the national team had finished fifth consecutively in Cameroon-2021 and Rwanda-2023.
Overall, the national "five" participated in Afrobasket with three wins and an equal number of defeats.
The victories came in the second round of Group "D" against Rwanda (72-55), in the play-off for access to the quarter-finals against Guinea Conakry (91-38) and in the first game of the fifth to eighth place play-off against Uganda (76-58).
The defeats came against Nigeria (60-55) in the third round of Group "D", against Mali (86-68) in the quarter-finals and on Saturday against Cameroon (60-40) in the fifth-place play-off.
